Interstate 85 bisects Lake Hartwell and this makes Hartwell one of the most accessible lakes in the nation. It is less than 2 hours from downtown Atlanta, GA, 2 hours from Charlotte, NC, and 1 hour from Greenville, SC.

Lake Hartwell has 962 miles of shoreline and 56,000 acres feature over 80 public boat launch, recreation and park areas. It is is one of the southeast’s largest and most popular public recreation lakes.
Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a flood control, hydropower and navigation project, it now provides valuable recreation, water quality, water supply and fish and wildlife management.
Each year, millions of people utilize the many public parks, marinas and campgrounds conveniently located around the lake to pursue a variety of outdoor recreational experiences – making Lake Hartwell one of the most visited Corps lakes in the nation.
Lake Hartwell offers some of the best boating, water-skiing and fishing in Georgia or South Carolina. Fish for one of Hartwell’s Striped Bass, relax on a quiet island, sail a Hobie Cat sailboat, tube behind your boat or ride your Personal Watercraft.
